Coal is not the answer to power poverty in places like India and China. Reuters Tackling climate change and reducing poverty can, and indeed must, go hand in hand. And the role for coal is rapidly shrinking, writes Helen Szoke. Over the past year, the coal industry has become increasingly strident in mounting its case that coal is the beacon of hope for the more than one billion people living in poverty who still lack access to electricity.

If the rhetoric of the industry is to be believed, exporting more and more of our coal to countries including India will provide safe, reliable electricity to poor people , as well as continued prosperity for Australia. But its argument does not stand up to even the most basic scrutiny. Firstly, emissions from coal are the biggest contributor to climate change. As a leading international agency working around the world, Oxfam is already seeing the world’s poorest people pushed deeper into poverty through the increasing risk of droughts, floods, hunger and disease due to climate change.

Secondly, there are serious limitations to the viability and cost effectiveness of coal and other fossil fuels to actually deliver electricity to those who still live without it. Over the past year, Carbon Tracker, Vasudha Foundation, The Australia Institute, Overseas Development Institute, Oxfam and many other organisations have explored the challenge of increasing energy access, with each providing robust evidence that distributed, renewable energy solutions are best suited to tackling energy poverty.

About four out of five people living without electricity are in rural areas that often lack connection to a conventional energy grid. The prohibitive cost of grid extensions, coupled with buying grid-based electricity, eliminates the cost advantage that coal may otherwise have.

The second season premieres at 10 p. This time, it focuses on teenage sex, bullying, and sexual identity at a private high school. It has an openness, realism, and frankness that’s refreshing, even shocking for viewers used to the double talk and saccharine sentimentality that sheaths those topics elsewhere on TV. ABC provided critics with the first four of 10 episodes, all equally stunning.

Continue Reading Below Advertisement Jack Unterweger was born in Austria in and spent his youth in and out of jail for petty crimes. It wasn’t until that Jack finally discovered his true passion, which was strangling prostitutes to death with their own bras. Who among you hasn’t wanted to strangle a hooker while dressed as the Great Gatsby?

Continue Reading Below Advertisement He was given a life sentence and imprisoned in Austria for what one would’ve assumed to be a lengthy stay, but while incarcerated he discovered a new talent that involved way less hooker death — Jack Unterweger began writing, and turned out to be surprisingly good at it.

His short stories, poems and plays got the attention of Austria’s intellectual elite, and his autobiography Fegefeuer – eine Reise ins Zuchthaus Purgatory — A Trip to Prison was actually made into a movie that was shown on Austrian national TV. Austrian intellectuals began a campaign to release Unterweger , believing that someone of his literary skill couldn’t possibly be capable of murdering anyone and insisting he must be cured of whatever mental defect he might have once had. Continue Reading Below Advertisement The campaign was a success, and Unterweger was freed after serving only 15 years for violent, brutal murder.

Thanks to the attention paid to him by his new literary friends, he immediately found work hosting television shows and discussing prison rehabilitation with the media. He also took to dressing in a style described as “a cross between a cowhand and a Mississippi preacher,” his new look as a dapper eccentric helping to disarm and charm those he came across and further convincing the people in his new social circle of his intelligence and artistic authenticity.

Continue Reading Below Advertisement Oddly enough, Jack apparently still really liked killing hookers — he strangled six in the first year after his release, again with their own bras. Before this unfortunate fact was realized, Jack took a trip to Los Angeles to write a story on prostitution for an Austrian magazine. He went on a freaking ride-along with the LAPD, and afterward strangled three local prostitutes, presumably for additional research. Police began closing in on Unterweger while he was still in the United States, and he lead the authorities on a nationwide chase.
