The Serial Number Problem The difficulty in determing where your SRV Strat fits into the production line lies in the fact that Fender serial numbering, apparently, has only to do with internal stock control and not particular dates of manufacture.

I have seen four A stamps on Natural finished bodies, and a trans-red with an A stamp. I’ve seen a C on a Monaco Yellow and a Sunburst. I have also seen a D, along with an A on a Sunburst body. This is just a theory, but if only A’s were put on Natural finished guitars as an example, it could help determine if a guitar is refinished. The number will have an ‘S’ prefix possibly an ‘E’, read below followed by a six digit number. The first digit is supposed to reflect the year of manufacture, but there are major overlaps in this regard, and the serial number should not be used to ID a guitar’s exact year of manufacture.

The last five digits are basically random. An important thing to look for are the matching serial number stickers in the neck pocket and on the pickguard.

Choose the Fender Serial Number: Most notably, production dates have been penciled or stamped on the butt end of the heel of the neck of most guitars and basses. There were periods of time when this was not consistently done, between and , and there are certainly other examples of short periods of time, and individual pieces, where the dating was simply omitted. While this neck dating is useful in roughly determining the age of a guitar, it is certainly not definitive.

The neck date simply refers to the date that the individual component was produced. Given the modular nature of Fender’s production techniques, an individual neck may have been produced in a given year, placed in the manufacturing warehouse and remained in stock for a period of time, and then subsequently paired with a body to create a complete guitar in the following year.

So, obviously a neck date, while being helpful in providing a date range of production, it cannot be a definitive reference. Unlike the auto industry which has specific model years for their products, most specifications for a given Fender instrument model, change little if any, through the lifetime of the model. While there have been periods where dramatic changes have occurred, for example: Serial numbers are also helpful in determining the year of production of a given instrument.

Dating s Fender Guitars by Neck Code: You may recall that I wrote an article in the March issue of TCG that described my research findings for dating Fender guitars and basses with those whacky green or red ink stamped codes. In , CBS-Fender began to implement a new type of neck stamp in place of the usual date stamp consisting of model code, month, year, neck width e.

The new code consisted of 6, 7 or 8 digits and was usually stamped in green ink. An example of this type of neck code found on a Precision Bass is B. Then in , Fender changed to a new type of neck stamp which had 8-digits which was stamped in green or red ink. An example of this is found on a Jazz Bass.

The backs of the pickups do not even have any stickers with the part or patent numbers. Instead they are hand scribed most likely done by Jeff Lace when in high school. The numbers on the pickups indicate the order which they were manufactured! The soldering is very interesting, almost like they were trying to decide how to wire them up.

Four decades of guitars from Czechoslovakia. When I wrote my original article about Eastern European guitars [Guitars of the Cold War, Vintage Guitar Magazine, January ], I was still in the process of researching the roots of these instruments. In the first two installments, I had focused on Russia almost exclusively, though I did mention Jolana guitars briefly. Since then, a lot of new information has come to light, enough to dedicate this third installment of “Guitars Of The Cold War” exclusively to guitars built in Czechoslovakia.

This is their story. The Czech Republic has a rich musical instrument building heritage.

I do not see it as different from any other product – where there is a demand, someone is going to fill it.

Stevie’s guitar is one of the most easily identifiable, famous guitars in history, and folks other than Fender have made dozens of replicas of Number One at prices from several hundred to five thousand dollars. Fender’s Custom Shop employs some of the best craftsman in the business, and it is not unusual for their guitars to sell for thousands of dollars due to the number of hours spent handcrafting each guitar.

It is my understanding that sales of the Number One guitars worked like this: Fender sold them to their top dealers in this case by a lottery system due to the high demand who can resell them to customers or not.
